THAMES TRAFALGAR RACE 2014 - Open to ALL cruisers

Dear Members,

Do you remember the great time we had last year with the Thames Trafalgar Race?  Then this is your chance to participate again - or for the first time if you missed it last year.

There are two starts depending upon the handicap of your yacht.  Last year EYC did really well, so we are keen to keep our winning ways against other clubs on the Thames....

Brief Programme:

Sat 18 October: day - Race from London or Greenwich YC to EYC

Sat 18 October: eve - Trafalgar Night Dinner at EYC till late into the night

Sun 19 October: day - Race from EYC to Greenwich

See here for Registering and further details:

It is a great weekend so keep the boat in the water and take part.

From the Sailing Committee

Yes, it is that time of the year to dust off your dancing skills and put them into practice at EYC.  EVERYONE is welcome to come along for a good social evening.  AND it is a FRIDAY.  Yes you may be tired after a week of work, but you do get the Sat and Sun to recover and go sailing.  What more could you want?

Please bring some food along with you.  EYC supplies the music thanks to John Cusick and his disk-turning skills.

Details are posted around the Club and Clubhouse.  See you there.

Just to confirm that the JYS will be on this Sunday from 9.30 to 12.30.

Please sign in and be changed by 9.30 so we can organise getting you on the water ASAP.

All helpers and hangers-on are welcome.

Hi All,

Sundowner this Friday from 6pm.  Do come along and get in your dinghy or cruiser.  The bar will be open afterwards.  Bring food or perhaps organise a fish & chip run...

If anyone is about to be on the safety boat then let the Commodore know.

Hope to see you all there.

Taster Day – Sunday 27 July 2014

The annual open day at EYC to offer non-memebers the chance to experience some sailing arrived quickly. The volunteers arrived at 830am ready to have a briefing from the Commodore about the duties and aims of the day.

Boats were readied and launched as the first visitors arrived. Sandwiches were made by a small dedicated group in the galley, ensuring that the volunteers were fed and watered. The day proceeded well with people being sent out on the Stratos Keels and on the cruisers, whose owners had volunteered their services for the day. The waterside was organised, rather hap-hazardly, by the Commodore, while the shore-side beach master was his usual efficient self – thank you Jonathan.

Unfortunately, sailing is dependent upon wind. At about 1pm the wind died off and then only came back in fits and starts. Therefore, visitors were taken for trips in the RIBS to experience boat handling and get a taste for the powerboat courses that are run at the Club.

Despite the lack of a Danson Show this year, members had been organised enough to attend the Dartford Show a few weeks before to promote the Club. As a result of their hard work we received a visit from the Mayor of Dartford, Councillor Avtar Sandhu, MBE. He had an enjoyable time sailing on Surfeit, the Hunter 707, with Duncan.

We achieved 72 visitors on the water this year. This is a good number, as we had a number of obsticles, such as the closure of Manor Road and no Danson Show. The expressions of interest in membership and courses were also greater than last year.

As Commodore, I want to thank all the volunteers who helped at the show, and helped organise the day, as well as those who turned up and got stuck in with all the duties that needed to be done. I am always amazed at the number of members who give up a day to do this for their Club. Thank you.

Jeremy Michell
