EYC Open Weekend – Sunday 16 September 2018

Weather: sunny with clouds

Wind: f 3 gusting 5-6

Course: upwind/downwind with a crooked dogleg around the committee boat (beware if you forget!!)

Greenwich Yacht Club finding themselves without a race officer decided that rather than go home they would come to share the best sailing area of the Thames and join in with the Open Racing at EYC. It was a delight to have them down with us. They are good friends of EYC. The racing upriver meant we saw little of the cruisers except when they crossed the dinghy course to their finish. Some interesting race rules being shouted at larger boats by some of the dinghies!!!

The tides were perfect for Greenwich to then take it home having had a great time racing with us.

The dinghies were joined for another year by the GP14 Association. They are a great bunch of active and competitive racers to have at the Club. Racing was certainly more lively with them focusing our attention! The racing was made the more challenging because of the gusts of over 20 knots and the shifty south-southwesterly wind.

The Race Officer’s briefing was either not listened to properly or ignored by some of the racers so the results show some DSQs where dinghies did not leave the committee boat to starboard. Most leant the lesson after the first race. Sorry Paul!!

There was a lot of close racing between boats but the course definitely favoured the symmetric spinnaker over the asymmetrics. However, it did not really matter as it kept the fleet focussed on racing against each other and watching for the gusts and shifts as they made their way to the finish lines.

The Stars raced their own course and held well in the strong winds despite being vintage boats. Well done to Harry Mitchell and his crew for winning the racing. They were spotted sitting at the back of the boat as the gusts nose-dived the bow… They did not care about the duck boards floating in a foot of water or that they had to bail water out. Well done every youth member who raced the Stars in those conditions. You did the spirit of Michael Robinson proud.

Thank you to Team Doris (Paul Reynolds and Sarah Gately) for trying to keep everyone in order and get as many races into the 2 hours we had. Also, thank you to Ed and Jo in Erith 3 and Hugh and Abraham in Erith 2 for looking after us. They were kept busy helping boats up, people back into them or towing boats ashore.

Finally we need to thank those who manned the bar over the weekend (Mary, John, Colin, Jerry), helped in the galley (Sara, Adrian, Kim, Andy) and those who popped in to assist all of the above. What a great weekend.

Windmill Trophy, Sunday 11 June 2017

Sunday was a breezy day but people wanted to race, so the JYS session was combined to give the kids an amazing experience on a cruiser and the cruiser owners got some crew…..win-win all round!!

Feedback was that everyone had a great time and there have been demands from some of the kids to do it again later in the year.

Thank you to those who supported the day and ran the racing.

NEXT RACE: FRIDAY 23 JUNE, 630pm: Diamond 2

NEXT RACE: SUNDAY 2 JULY, 130pm: Foote Mitchell 1
