Hamble Star No. 1 Owners list for 1956 annotated - almost total loss

Built by A.R.Luke 1925

Original Name Sirius The original 8 Stars were built in 1925 by A.R.Luke for £37 which included everything but oars,

although rowlocks were included in the £37. The original Luke built boats were built with only

two planks in the topside and three in the bottom but due to the width of these planks they

opened up badly during the winter lay up and after the war most were built with narrow planking.

It is also known that some boats built after the war were given lower numbers to 'fill in' gaps

which had by then appeared

No 1 Sirius was recorded racing at Hamble in 1939,1951

Hamble Star No. 61 A number of Stars were built, probably by Sees of Fareham, in about 1946,for the R.A.F Thorney

Built by 1946 Island sailing club. Some reports suggest there were 8 which would have been 61 - 68 but they

were possibly never registered with the Star class. although subs were paid by Thorney island

for 8 boats in 1949, and may have been sailed under numbers 1 to 8 by T.I.S.C. other reports

suggest the included numbers 58 & 59.

They were all sold off by 1967 and probably disintegrated One was apparently found at Emsworth

in 1974

Hamble Star No. 68 This number was given to an unregistered boat brought, from Kings Lynn, by a member to Erith in

At Erith 1954. The owner believed she might be an 'extra' to the eight Thorney Island had and the number

might be 69 or 70. The number was chosen as a spare set of sails was available for Star 98 which

entailed only one number being turned upside down. There was no record of a boat number 68 at

that time so that number was assigned and it was decided the number would be changed if another

number 68 turned up at any time with a better claim. Appears in a photograph of 4 Stars racing

at Erith in the book Classic One Designs, published 1994, by Jack Coote.

Identification - Middle thwart does not line up with back of c/p case. In 1997 this Star was

taken on a Charity trip by Mick Bodsworth to raise funds for the Michael Robinson Sailing Trust

and the Limbless Association. Mick, who has only one leg took the Star, by sail outboard and

oar, from Gravesend on the Thames up the London River through central London. Then into the

canal system up the Grand Union canal to Birmingham down the Severn, sailing into Bristol then

back along the Kennet and Avon canal into the Thames again.

Hamble Star No. 100 Built after the war for Hamble River S.C. where Bill Hibbs organized a raffle with her. 200 £1

Built by Port Hamble 0 tickets were sold, making a profit of £100 the cost of the boat being £100. In August 1965 Cecil

At Erith Lewis the father of the then owner of Star 106 bought a set of Star sails from the Bovington

Army Camp as a spare set for 106 they asked if he wanted the scrapped boat they came from! they

delivered the sails and Hamble Star 100!. It came as a complete wreck, filled with about 4

inches of tar throughout - the army's attempt to stop it leaking. The chines were split,

centreplate case was completly rotten and all the timbers were broken. The only parts in

reasonable condition were the planks. Over the next three years Ian Underdown completly rebuilt

in with the aid of Cecil Lewis. The outside of the hull was painted light blue and the inside

cream. In 1970 she was offered for sale for £70 by R Aplin of Swanage. She was brought to E.Y.C.

Hamble Star No. 114 Built 1961 by apprentices at Hornby and Wallasey for M.S.Robinson Erith Yacht Club. œ75 deposit

Built by Hornby&Walla 1961 paid Nov 21 1961 total cost œ135 for hull and centre plate not tackle PVC caulking for bottom

At Erith (the first Star to have this frm new ) and normal for the sides, order did NOT include mast,

spars rigging, bottom boards tiller, rudder, pintles and gudgeon, keel and stem band, rubbing

strake all cleats and other fittings including chain plates, oars and bouyancy estimated to be

worth about œ150. Boat was built from 'offcuts' from larger yachts and not as most Stars from

matching planks. As a result all planks on the bottom differ in colour and the topsides have a

rather attractive striped appearence with 3 of the planks each side being a matching light

mahogany while the third plank down on each side was a much darker redish colour.

She was also built with the mast held in a metal gate at the rear of the forward thwart, (for

easier mast lowering for Dutch bridges), instead of as usual through a hole in the centre of the

thwart. It was intended that the builders achieve this by moving the thwart about 31/4" forward,

it was noticed some years later that the mast had been moved 3" forward instead!, and the thwart

about 6" to accomodate the gate. This had never appeared to make any difference to her sailing

performance compared to other stars.

Sailed in Friesland approx 1960-1973

Hamble Star No. aaa Built @1954 described as a 'near star' and never registered was fitted with a foredeck and

Built by Smart/Chittenden 1954 sailed at Erith with No. 1 on sail. For many years held the record on E.Y.C's Pinmill Trophy

Original Name Shoestring (fastest passage during a season from Erith to Pinmill) having covered the distance in

The book Classic One Designs published 1994 by Jack Coote has a photo showing 4 Stars racing at

Erith, probably in the 1950's one of which is probably Shoestring. Hamble Star ‘No 1’ was offered

for sale in the Midlands recently. Some Erith members viewed her and the boat was positively

identified as ‘Shoestring’ unfortunately the price was too high to bring her to Erith.
